Check that the life jacket is labelled to Australian Standard AS 4578. This is the most up to date Australia Standards. 

Make sure the type (L50, L50S) is legal for your waterway (smooth vs open vs partially smooth). Regulations vary by state. So check state maritime safety rules (for example, QLD requires certain vests when crossing bars or on small vessels). Read More Here - Jetpilot Australia.
